SEA LIONS FALL ON ROAD TO GOLDEN EAGLES

(IRVINE, Calif.) When Point Loma and Concordia met in men's soccer four weeks ago, the game finished 2-0. Wednesday night's matchup ended with the same scoreline, except this time the result didn't go in PLNU's favor.

CUI scored one goal in each half, avenging last month's loss to PLNU and putting a significant dent in the Sea Lions' conference title hopes.

Entering the night, Point Loma somewhat controlled its own destiny in the conference standings, entering the match eight points behind league leaders Dominican but with two matches in hand. Had PLNU won each of those two matches, they would have only been two points out of first with Dominican still on the schedule to close out the regular season.

However, after Wednesday's loss, the Sea Lions will now need a lot more help ahead of them if they are to have any hopes of winning their first-ever PacWest championship.

Point Loma started brightly and matched Concordia with seven shots in the opening 45 minutes, but it was the Golden Eagles who managed to break the deadlock in the 16th minute.

CUI's defense then limited PLNU to just three shots in the second half, while the Golden Eagles managed 10, scoring their second goal in the 71st.

Austin Lavell forced a save early in the second half with a fine volley from a tight angle, while Parker Scalzo's effort was blocked late on, but the Sea Lions were unable to find a way past the Golden Eagles' goalkeeper.

Point Loma (5-5-3 overall, 2-2-1 PacWest) next returns home for its final three matches on PLNU Soccer Field this season, beginning on Monday when the Sea Lions host Hawai'I Hilo at 3:30 p.m.
