(IRVINE, Calif.) Point Loma Women's Soccer entered Wednesday's PacWest match at Concordia looking to get revenge after the Golden Eagles gave the Sea Lions their first loss of the season back on Sep. 21.
Â
Instead, CUI defeated PLNU for a second time, this time by a 2-0 margin, to end Point Loma's four-game winning streak to begin conference play.
Â
"Obviously it's not how we wanted today to go," Head Coach
Kristi Kiely said. "They had two quality chances and scored two goals. We had many good looks and couldn't find the back of the net."
Â
When the two teams met last month, the Golden Eagles won 2-1, converting both of their shots on target. This time around, they scored twice on just three shots on goal, both coming in quick succession in the first half.
Â
The Golden Eagles broke the deadlock in the 32nd minute before adding a second less than four minutes later.
Â
After mustering four shots in the first half, Point Loma doubled that number in the second half, but were still unable to find the back of the net. The shutout marks the first time this season that PLNU has been held without a goal.
Â
It is also the first time the Sea Lions have lost to the same team twice in one season since 2015, when Sonoma State took down the Sea Lions on two occasions.
Â
The upcoming schedule doesn't get any easier for Point Loma, who dropped to third in the conference standings with the loss, as PLNU's next two games come against the two teams above the Sea Lions in the conference standings.
Â
That stretch begins on Monday at 1 p.m. with a home matchup against Hawai'i Hilo, the team Point Loma shared the PacWest title with a season ago.
Â
"I'm looking forward to what we can learn from this and how we respond," Kiely said. "All good moments for growth. I don't think we will be deterred."
