SEA LIONS SWEEP SHARKS

(HONOLULU) Coming off its biggest win of the season, PLNU Volleyball didn't let down on Thursday night at Hawaii Pacific, sweeping the Sharks in three sets (25-19, 25-12, 25-20).

The win improves Point Loma to 15-6 overall (10-3 PacWest) and moves the Sea Lions into sole second place in the conference standings, a half-game ahead of both Concordia and Fresno Pacific.

In the first set, HPU took an early 8-4 lead, but PLNU fought its way back with a Torina Hommes kill and solo block sparking a 4-0 run that put the Sea Lions ahead, 17-14. After the Sharks got back to within one, Maggie Wolf served a pair of aces before Hommes clinched the set with another kill.

Point Loma then dominated the second stanza, hitting .476 and committing just a single error. PLNU raced out to an immediate 9-3 lead, as the Sea Lions' advantage never shrunk to less than four the rest of the set before winning by 13.

The visitors were then able to finish the job by also claiming the third set, but they were made to work for it. A 6-0 run, helped by four PLNU attacking errors, gave HPU a 12-7 lead, only for Point Loma to respond with two different 5-0 streaks to take back control of the set.

The Sharks got to within four at 22-18, but the Sea Lions managed to trade points the rest of the way, ultimately claiming the match after an HPU attacking error.

Abigail Nua led PLNU with 12 kills, while Torina Hommes (six kills) dominated at the net with a career-high seven blocks. Lauren Phillips and Wolf each dished out 15 assists, while serving four and three aces respectively. Courtney led the Sea Lions with her 13 digs.

After two wins on back-to-back nights, PLNU will look to finish a perfect trip to Hawaii with a matchup against Hawaii Hilo on Saturday. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. local time (10 p.m. PST).
