(OAKLAND, Calif.) PLNU Women's Volleyball bounced back from a heartbreaking loss on Friday night to sweep Holy Names on Saturday (25-13, 25-15, 25-20).
Â
"I am proud of the girls and their response from a tough night last night," Head Coach
Jonathan Scott said. "We were hungry, and it showed."
Â
Point Loma came within a point of completing a reverse sweep against Fresno Pacific on Friday, having two match points saved in a five-set loss, but the Sea Lions came out swinging in the first set on Saturday, hitting .368.
Â
PLNU's offense cooled off, but its defense didn't, limiting the Hawks to a hitting % of .077 or lower in each set.
Â
Courtney Dyer opened the match with one of her three service aces, which brings her career total to 141. That number is tied with PLNU's All-PacWest setter Savannah Wedemeyer (2012-15) for fourth all-time in PacWest history and the most in Point Loma's NCAA era.
Â
With PLNU ahead 13-10 in the opening stanza, the Sea Lions went on a 5-0 run, helped by a pair of
Bailey Williams kills, to run away with the first set.
Â
Holy Names scored the first two points of the second stanza and led 5-2, before Point Loma responded with a 9-0 run on
Abigail Nua's serving to take control of the set. After Nua's two service aces in that stretch, Williams served a couple aces herself as part of six-point PLNU streak that put the Sea Lions up by double digits in the set, 18-8.
Â
After cruising in the first two sets, Point Loma mostly controlled set three as well, before two separate 4-0 runs from HNU late on got the Hawks to within four.
Claire Smith then promptly ended the match with her match-high 10th kill.
Â
Nua (eight kills, three aces, nine digs) and Williams (seven kills, two aces) were next in line offensively for the Sea Lions.
Lauren Phillips dished out 32 assists to orchestrate the Sea Lion attack, while Dyer (22 digs) and
Grace Hicks (five blocks) led the way defensively.
Â
Point Loma (12-5 overall, 7-2 PacWest) return to Golden Gym on Friday, when the Sea Lions host Academy of Art at 6 p.m. on Faculty Appreciation Night.
