(TURLOCK, Calif.) PLNU Men's Basketball trailed at halftime against Cal State East Bay on Saturday night, but rallied in the second half to win its second-straight game to start the new season, 68-62.
The two wins at the Crossover Classic left Point Loma as the only unbeaten at the four-team tournament, giving the Sea Lions the unofficial tournament championship.
"I'm really proud of our guys' fight and toughness tonight," Head Coach
Matt Logie said. "East Bay is a very tough team and compete extremely hard. We stayed together and played great defense in the second half which enabled us to pull away."
Â
Point Loma trailed by as many as five before
Kaden Anderson's 3-pointer with just a few seconds left in the opening half cut PLNU's halftime deficit to two, 28-30.
Â
East Bay scored the first points of the second half, but the Sea Lions quickly tied the game on a bucket from
Brian Goracke, before
Luke Haupt's 3-pointer gave Point Loma its first lead since early in the first half.
Â
East Bay tied the game at 39-39 with 13:54 to play, but after two scoreless minutes from both sides,
Kyle Colvin's jumper put PLNU ahead for good.
Â
Goracke's layup extended the Sea Lions' lead to a game-high nine points with 3:37 left, only for an 8-0 CSUEB run to get the Pioneers to within one with just under two minutes remaining.
Â
But
Kaden Anderson's jumper stopped their streak and PLNU made its free throws down the stretch to pull away late.
Â
Anderson led the team in scoring with 24 points, while adding nine rebounds, earning Crossover Classic MVP honors. Goracke joined Anderson on the All-Tournament Team after scoring in double figures once again, pitching in 12 points and five boards.
Â
Haupt joined the duo in double figures, adding 10 points, six rebounds and four assists.
Â
Logie said the difference in the game was his team's 22-4 advantage in points off turnovers, with the Sea Lions committing 12 fewer turnovers (seven) than the Pioneers (19).
Â
"All of us know that our offense will come, but to win two on the road with our defense is a great sign for our new group," Logie said.
Â
Point Loma (2-0 overall) now returns to Golden Gym for its home opener on Tuesday against Northwest Nazarene. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
