CARSON, Calif.-Extending the program best ten-game winning streak to start the season, the Point Loma Sea Lions (10-0 overall) routed the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros 16-6 behind their largest hit total of the season as PLNU completed a perfect non-conference schedule Saturday afternoon at Toro Field.
Point Loma's 18 hits matched their season best as PLNU thumped their way to a 10-0 lead.
After
Jack Gonzales traded 0's in the first with CSUDH, Point Loma delivered some run support for the southpaw with
Jason DuMont delivering a hard-hit ball by the first-basemen plating
Jakob Christian and
Izayah Alvarez and putting the Sea Lions on the board.
Otto Kemp singled home DuMont and stole second, scoring on
Scott Anderson's single.
That was enough for Gonzales who tossed three more scoreless innings before giving way to the Sea Lion's bullpen.
Point Loma's offense added a pair of runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to make the game 10-0 by the time the bullpen entered.
Cayden Rana and
Connor Hill tossed scoreless innings of relief getting Point Loma up to the 7
th inning.
The offense added another four-run frame, including a two run single by
James Halpin, opening up the game to 14-0.
But the Toro's offense erupted in the bottom of the 7
th, striking for 6 runs, including a three-run homer.
Point Loma tacked on two more in the eighth to squelch any signs of a comeback and close the non-conference start to the season with a perfect record.
Seven different relievers followed Gonzales on the hill with the 7
th inning being the only blemish that PLNU surrendered all series.
Baxter Halligan continued to attack opposing pitchers with a 5-6 day that included an RBI and 4 runs scored. He's 18-35 on the season. Four other Sea Lions had multi-hit games with Alvarez finishing 3-5 with 2 RBI. Kemp, Anderson,
Easton Waterman and Alvarez all joined Halligan in scoring multiple times.
