SAN DIEGO–The Point Loma Sea Lions (8-6 overall) made quick work of the Merrimack Warriors (4-6 overall) 7-0 Monday afternoon on the Point Loma Tennis Courts.
Jasdeep Paintal and
David Strassburger set the tone, in doubles, as they took the Warriors down with ease in a 6-0 win on court 2.
"We don't miss." Paintal said, "The team came out of the gates really hot, ready to take down the East coast D1 which is exactly what we did."
Alejandro Castaneda and
Alexander Leischner not only share a nickname, but also court 3 in doubles. The pair followed suit with a 6-3 victory. This added the third consecutive win for the Alex duo and secured the doubles decision in favor of Point Loma, putting them up 1-0 as they entered into singles play.
"I prefer staying near the baseline" Said Leischner "As soon as I put pressure from behind, I can count on Alejandro to finish at the net."
In singles, Leischner towered over his opponent to tally the first singles point for the Sea Lions in an impressive 6-0, 6-0 performance.
Over the last 5 matches, Leischner's serve has only been broken 4 times.
"His serve is a weapon," said Point Loma Head Coach
Curt Wheeler "Leischner executes solid tennis through his consistent baseline style, putting pressure on the opponent to keep up."
Point Loma swept all 7 singles courts Monday in two sets.
Tyler Davis took to court 1 quickly in a 6-4, 6-2 triumph.
Nabeel Khan and
Alejandro Castaneda elevated the Sea Lions over the Warriors in mirrored 6-3, 6-3 wins putting Point Loma up 5-0 over Merrimack College.
Paintal picked up his fifth consecutive win in singles action, sending an overhead slam into the back corner of the court, imposing a 6-2, 6-4 win.
Following a rollercoaster of momentum shifts, Strassburger was able to come out on top 6-4, 7-6-3 tiebreak on court 2.
"It was a great overall performance by the men today," said Wheeler. "They came out focused, prepared, and ready to play their best tennis. This win brings great momentum heading into an important conference match on Friday."
The Sea Lions gain rhythm, improving to 8-6 this season as they continue homestand against PacWest opponent Hawai'i Hilo Friday at 11:00 am on the PLNU Tennis Courts.
