SAN DIEGO-Using a walk-off home run and a complete game pitching performance, the Point Loma Sea Lions (20-2 overall, 6-2 PacWest) extended the best start in program history with a doubleheader sweep of the Hawai'i Pacific Sharks (12-13 overall, 6-8 PacWest) Tuesday afternoon at Carroll B. Land Stadium.
Point Loma was down three heading into the bottom of the ninth before
Jakob Christian's 3-run homer tied the game.
Scott Anderson walked it off with a solo homer in the 12th for a 6-5 victory.
Senior
Jack Gonzales delivered a gem in game two, leading Point Loma to a 4-2 victory in the late game to secure another series victory for the Sea Lions.
But Point Loma had to deal with a Hawai'i Pacific team that made every inning stressful, picking up from Monday's late game.
Point Loma turned to the Senior starter
Nathan Garkow to temper HPU's high flying style.
Garkow kept HPU in check in the top of the first, working around a single in the top half of the inning to keep the Sharks off the board.
In the bottom half, Point Loma struck thanks to some shaky defense from the Sharks.
Scott Anderson walked with one out and then moved to second on a failed pickoff attempt. One batter later, a wild pitch caused Anderson to take off to third and an errant throw from the HPU catcher skipped into left field, bringing in Point Loma's first run of the day.
Garkow traded zeroes with HPU's Markus Ramos in the 2
nd despite the Sharks putting a runner on third in the inning.
Both pitchers kept the scoreline the same in the third as well, but Tejean Smith's solo homer to lead off the top of the fourth pulled Hawai'i Pacific even at one.
Point Loma immediately responded in the bottom of the inning as
Baxter Halligan's leadoff triple was cashed in by
Easton Waterman's groundout as the Sea Lions immediately regained the lead at 2-1.
Garkow locked in after the run of support, working around an error to induce a double play on the very next pitch. The senior used just six more pitches in the inning, eight overall in the frame, to maintain the 2-1 into the bottom of the 5
th.
But HPU tied the game again on Smith's 6
th inning double that plated Nicholas Jio making the score 2-2.
Garkow struck out the next batter before ceding the ball to the bullpen with two outs in the sixth. Garkow finished with a season-high 8 strikeouts.
But Hawai'i Pacific wasn't done in the inning, taking advantage of a hit batter and then a dropped fly ball in right. Haydon Huff's 2-run double after the error widened the margin to three.
Point Loma just put single baserunners on in each of the 7
th and 8
th innings against HPU reliever Jack O'Brien, but could not make it any closer heading into the final inning.
O'Brien started the ninth as well, trying to duplicate the three-inning save that each team captured on Monday.
Hunter Otjen started the inning with an infield single before
Jack Malone doubled to put runners on 2
nd and 3
rd with nobody out.
Freshman
Jakob Christian then worked the count full before blasting a game-tying homer over the left-field wall, evening the score at 5-5.
HPU sent the game into extra innings, preventing PLNU from walking off. After a scoreless tenth, Point Loma built a threat with two outs in the bottom of the 11
th.
Pinch-hitter
Adam Axtell drew a walk before pinch-runner
Seth Ryberg stole second and went to third on a throwing error as the ball sailed into center field.
HPU got the strikeout to end the inning and keep the game going.
That was until the bottom of the 12
th, when Anderson drove a ball over the right-center field fence, walking off the victory for Point Loma, 6-5.
Jonathan Kozasky pitched a scoreless inning in the 12
th to earn his first win for Point Loma.
Game 2 picked up with the stalemate as neither team could crack the starters over the first two innings.
Jack Gonzales for PLNU, retired the first six batters he faced, while Mac Leisher of HPU avoided a pair of Point Loma threats.
HPU finally cracked the scoreboard in the top of the third, when Tejean Smith singled home a run.
The Sharks added another run in the top of the 5
th when Nicholas Jio singled in a run to make it 2-0 HPU.
Point Loma responded in the bottom of the fifth as
Adam Axtell's triple down the left-field line set the stage for a big inning.
Jake Entrekin singled him home and later scored on
Otto Kemp's double off of the center-field wall. Anderson singled in front of the left fielder to move Kemp to third before Halligan reached on a sacrifice bunt on a squeeze scored Kemp to give the Sea Lions the lead.
After Waterman walked to load the bases,
Jack Malone's sacrifice fly put Point Loma in the lead 4-2.
That was all Gonzales needed, despite surrendering a single to start the sixth, he retired the final six batters of the game including three strikeouts to seal the game and the series for Point Loma.
Gonzales runs his record to 4-0, finishing the 7 innings complete game with 6 strikeouts while scattering six baserunners (5 hits and a walk) as Point Loma improves to a PacWest best 20-2 on the season.
Despite the comfortable 11-0 win in game one of the series, Point Loma had to fight off a feisty HPU team that sprung for 9 runs in the series while limiting the Sea Lion's chances throughout.
Still, the 4
th ranked Sea Lions found clutch hitting and pitching throughout Tuesday's wins to ensure their sixth straight series victory.
Despite Monday's defeat, the Sea Lions are continuing the best start in school history topping 2007's 12-2 start for the latest a PLNU baseball team has suffered multiple victories.
Point Loma will have ten days off before traveling up north for a four-game series against PacWest foe Holy Names in Oakland on March 25 and 26.
