FRESNO, Calif.-Despite overcoming a first-half deficit, the Point Loma Sea Lions (21-9 overall) forced overtime before a three-pointer with 2.7 seconds left derailed their bid for a Tournament Championship, falling 78-75 in overtime to the Academy of Art Urban Knights (19-11 overall) Friday at the Special Events Center.
Point Loma started slowly with uncharacteristic turnovers plaguing their offensive firepower.
The first four minutes were a defensive battle with Point Loma holding the Academy of Art to just 1-7 from the field. The Sea Lions scored on baskets by
Hugh Baxter and
Brock Mackenzie to hold a narrow 4-3 advantage at the first media timeout.
The Urban Knights fought to take the lead over the next segment, going up 11-10. Point Loma's response came on the offensive glass as
Ben Okhotin buried a 2nd chance 3-pointer to regain the lead for the Sea Lions.
Trey Anderson added a steal and followed up a contested layup with a put-back to stretch the lead to 14-11 with 10:30 to play in the first half.
In a 14-14 tie, Point Loma has assessed a technical and offensive foul on back-to-back possessions that gave the Academy of Art an 18-14 lead.
Brian Goracke answered with a three as PLNU found themselves down 18-17 with 7:07 in the half. After a putback by the  Urban Knights, Mackenzie tied the game with a three.
But the Academy of Art answered again with a three and a layup off of a steal to grab a 25-20 lead.
It was 14 first-half turnovers by Point Loma that turned into 17 points for the Urban Knights, half of their offense, and led to a 34-27 ArtU lead at the break.
Point Loma quickly overcame the deficit with a 10-2 run to start the 2
nd half and exchanged leads with the Academy of Art over the first five minutes of the period.
The Urban Knights grabbed the lead midway through the second, extending the difference to as much as 8.
The Sea Lions fought back behind a monster 2
nd half from Mackenzie and dug out of the deficit.
Anderson hit a three to tie the game at 63, but Art quickly answered back with a three of their own.
With time winding down, Mackenzie delivered the rebuttal, a right-wing three that tied the game at 66.
The Urban Knight's buzzer-beater grazed off the rim sending the game into overtime.
Point Loma jumped up by five in overtime behind six points from
Kaden Anderson. But a steal and a layup set up ArtU within 3 before Anderson was called for a foul on a three-point attempt.
The Urban Knights made all three to tie the game and then had possession on the final 30 seconds and went ahead on a corner three with 2.7 seconds remaining.
Point Loma's in-bound hit a wire attached to the ceiling and ArtU sealed the upset victory.
Point Loma turned the ball over 23 times, the second-most of the season and their most since their January 6
th matchup against the Urban Knights. That translated to 31 points for ArtU, nearly half their total.
Point Loma was led by Mackenzie's 26 points.
Kaden Anderson added 18 points and
Ben Okhotin chipped in 12.
The Academy of Art will continue to the PacWest Final against Azusa Pacific Saturday at 2:00 pm in Fresno.
Point Loma will wait until Sunday night to find out if they will make the Regional. The Sea Lions are ranked 4
th in the West and hoping for one of five at-large bids.
