FRESNO, Calif.-A hard-nosed effort ultimately came up short as the Point Loma Sea Lions (15-14 overall) lost 77-62 to the Academy of Art Urban Knights (18-9 overall) in the PacWest Semifinal Friday night at the Special Events Center.
Point Loma was neck and neck with the Urban Knights through the first media timeout, leading 9-8.
But the Academy of Art went on a 13-2 run to close the quarter and stake a double-digit lead.
The Sea Lions dug into that difference behind ten points from
Alix Henderson, 8 of which came in the 2
nd quarter. Point Loma's ability to get out in transition, and limit the Urban Knights from doing so, also helped the Sea Lions hang tight in the first half.
The Sea Lions shot 5-9 from the field in the 2
nd quarter but were out-rebounded by 11 limiting their opportunity to bring the game any closer.
The Academy of Art held a 34-25 lead at halftime.
Point Loma inched a bit closer in the third quarter, as
Cara Liggins scored half of PLNU's 14 points and PLNU outscored ArtU by one for the second consecutive quarter.
Liggins,
Haylee Saurette, and Henderson combined for 20 of Point Loma's 23 points in the fourth quarter, but the Urban Knight erupted for 30 points in the period to seal the game.
Liggins finished her Point Loma career with 19 points, solidifying her place in 4
th all-time in Point Loma history for points. She added 3 more rebounds, for 1,019 career boards, to her school record.
Henderson finished with 15 points and Saurette added 11.
Point Loma took care of the basketball, limiting their turnovers to 13. But ArtU turned those into 12 points.
The Urban Knights became one of the few teams to outrebound PLNU and turned that into 8 more shots than the Sea Lions. Art also shot 14 more free throws.
The Sea Lions still stifled the Urban Knights from the field, holding them to 35%. But 9 made three's for the Academy of Art was more than the difference in the game.
