MILLER'S NO HITTER HIGHLIGHTS PLNU'S PITCHING POWER IN SWEEP OF CUI

SAN DIEGO-Headlined by Dylan Miller's first career no-hitter, the Point Loma Sea Lions (15-1 overall, 3-1 PacWest) swept a Saturday doubleheader from the Concordia Eagles (9-6-1 overall, 3-1 PacWest) 5-2 and 13-0 at Carroll B. Land Stadium.

Pitching proved to be the difference in both games for the Sea Lions, but the offense gave four different Point Loma arms plenty of support.

However, Point Loma missed some early opportunities to run away in game one.

Concordia staked a two-run lead on a 2nd inning homer from Richard Castro against Point Loma starter Baxter Halligan.

The Sea Lions responded in the bottom of the inning behind a leadoff double from Easton Waterman. Hunter Otjen singled to move Waterman to third, and Jack Malone brought in the PLNU catcher with an RBI groundout, cutting Concordia's lead in half.

Halligan settled in from there working around a two-out walk in the third but keeping the Sea Lions within striking distance at 2-1.

And strike they did. After Kemp was hit by a pitch for the 2nd time in as many at-bats, Scott Anderson doubled to put Kemp on third. Halligan delivered the RBI groundout to tie the game at 2. Waterman then delivered the go-ahead single.

Point Loma never trailed the rest of the day.

Halligan navigated around three base runners over the next two innings, but maintained the lead, before exiting with a runner on in the sixth.

Zach Veen entered the one-run ball game and struck out the side, stranding Concordia's runner on 2nd base. That was the last time over the next 13 innings that the Eagles would get that far.

Point Loma added two more runs in the bottom of the inning as Michael Pineiro led off the inning with a pinch-hit single. After a walk and a hit batter loaded the bases, Pineiro scored on a wild pitch. Halligan cashed home another run with an RBI single later in the inning, pushing the score to 5-2.

That would be plenty for the Sea Lions' bullpen as Veen worked a scoreless 7th adding another strikeout to his tally.

Cole Hillier slammed the door shut over the 8th and 9th innings, striking out five of the six batters he faced to earn his 5th save of the season.

In the 2nd game, Miller picked up right where the bullpen left off, working around a two-out walk as Waterman threw out the would-be base stealer to end the inning.

Point Loma immediately responded as Kemp started the bottom of the inning off with a walk. While the next pitch appeared to be a tailor-made double-play, the ball squeaked under the 2nd basemen's glove into right field moving Kemp to third. Halligan then delivered another RBI groundout to give Point Loma the 1-0 lead.

That was more than enough for Miller who would deliver a career performance.

The sophomore from Jacksonville set down the final 18 batters he faced while tallying a career-high 11 strikeouts. Miller was in such command that he only had 4 counts with 3 called balls the rest of the game.

Miller registered at least one strikeout in every inning. He also received some excellent backing defensively, as Pineiro made a pair of plays at first base with Miller covering, which prevented any more base runners.

The Sea Lions also gave their starter plenty of run support.

In the bottom of the third, while it was still 1-0, Anderson laced a ball to center field that skipped to the wall for a leadoff double.

Halligan then ripped a two-run homer through the wind over the center field fence, stretching the lead to 3-0.

In the bottom of the fourth, Izayah Alvarez started the inning with a single, moved to second on a Pineiro sacrifice, and scored on J.J. Gerarden's RBI single. With two outs in the inning, Anderson belted his first homer of the season over the right-center field fence.

Halligan then walked, and Waterman completed the four-run inning with an RBI double, giving Point Loma a 7-0 lead.

The Sea Lions sprung for three more runs in the bottom of the fifth, with Jack Malone starting the inning by doubling down the left-field line. After Alvarez singled, Pineiro ripped his 2nd homer of the year for a 10-0 lead.

Point Loma added the final three runs in the sixth after Gerarden was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in a run and then Kemp singled in two more.

That was plenty of cushion for Miller heading into the 7th, who utilized one of Pineiro's snags to start the inning and followed it up with a strikeout and a fly out into the glove of Alvarez in left to complete the no-hitter.

Miller faced the minimum thanks to the caught stealing to end the first inning and retired 20 of the 21 batters he faced.

The Sea Lions pitching staff held Concordia to 3 hits over 16 innings while striking out 26 batters.

While the games are non-conference, both teams enter the series ranked in the top 25 and the top 10 of the West Region.

Both teams will have the day off Sunday before concluding the series in Irvine for a doubleheader (9 innings and 7 innings) beginning at 11:00 am Monday.
