PLNU COMPLETES PERFECT NON-CONFERENCE WITH SWEEP OF BIOLA

LA MIRADA, Calif.-Completing the non-conference portion of the schedule with a perfect record, the Point Loma Sea Lions (27-3 overall, 9-3 PacWest) completed a four-game sweep of the Biola Eagles (12-16 overall, 8-4 PacWest) Saturday at the Eagles Diamond.

Big innings highlighted both wins for the Sea Lions as a four-run first sparked a 7-4 win in game one. Point Loma followed it up with a 6-5 win in 8 innings to complete the sweep.

After never trailing in Friday's doubleheader, Point Loma wasted little time taking the lead on Saturday. Taking advantage of a walk to Otto Kemp and Baxter Halligan being hit by a pitch, Jakob Christian singled through the left side to bring home the first run of the game. Hunter Otjen singled and Adam Axtell's RBI groundout brought home Halligan to double the lead to 2-0.

Just when it appeared Biola might get out of the inning without inning further damage, a groundball to second base was thrown away and both Christian and Otjen scored to expand Point Loma's lead to 4-0.

The Sea Lion's starter Nathan Garkow kept the lead intact until the bottom of the 2nd inning when a solo homer by Wyatt Duncan gave Biola its first run of the series.

Point Loma quickly reset the lead in the top of the third when Otjen blasted a solo homer over the left-field fence.

Biola pushed another run across in the bottom of the fourth with a sacrifice fly pulling the game back to 5-2.

Kemp retrieved that run for Point Loma in the top of the 5th with a home run to straightaway center field that tested the limits of the protective netting guarding the road beyond the fence at The Eagles Diamond.

However, Oscar Serratos answered in the bottom of the 5th for Biola with a solo home run as the tug-of-war pulled the difference back to three runs at 6-3.

But Point Loma's imposing lefty reliever Zach Veen entered with one out in the inning and halted Biola from getting any closer.

Veen continued to shutdown Biola over the next three innings keeping the score at 6-3 into the top of the 9th. In all, Veen went 3.2 innings

Point Loma extended the lead in the top of the frame, as Scott Anderson capitalized on a pair of walks to Jack Malone and Izayah Alvarez by singling through the right side. Malone got a great jump on the ground ball and cruised around third, pushing the PLNU lead to 7-3.

In game two, Point Loma fell behind for the first time in the series as Biola used a sacrifice fly in the first and a solo homer in the third.

Down 2-0 in the fourth, Point Loma responded as Otjen belted his second homer of the day. That was enough to wake up the PLNU offense, however, as Easton Waterman doubled and moved to third on a wild pitch. After Malone walked, Alvarez perfectly placed a bunt single to bring home Waterman, tying the game at 2-2.

Alvarez then stole second base, allowing Kemp's groundout to produce the go-ahead run. Scott Anderson backed that up with his 2nd homer of the series that drifted over the center-field wall.

Point Loma's lead remained 5-2 into the bottom of the 6th when Biola cranked out three consecutive solo home runs to tie the game at 5-5.

While the game was scheduled for 7 innings, the tie game extended into the top of the 8th. Waterman walked to start the frame and moved to second on a groundout. After Alvarez reached on an error, Kemp's deep fly ball to right moved the runners to second and third. An intentional walk to Anderson loaded the bases for Baxter Halligan.

The lefty queued a ball into the hole at deep short, and while the Biola shortstop reached the ball before it made its way into left field, there was no play to be made and Waterman scored the go-ahead run.

Cole Hillier locked down his ninth save of the year to secure the sweep for Point Loma.

The sweep also completes the non-conference portion of the schedule with Point Loma finishing a perfect 18-0 in games that count outside of the PacWest standings. All 18 of those games came against teams ranked at one point in the NCBWA West Region Top 10 and they included four sweeps of four-game series spanning teams from, the CCAA, GNAC, and the PacWest.

It also continues the best start to a season in Point Loma history as no team has been 27-3 through 30 games.

Point Loma will jump back into conference play with another trip to Northern California next weekend as they will visit the Academy of Art for a four-game series in Oakland beginning on Friday.
