SURPRISE, Ariz.-What started close, ended up looking lopsided as the Point Loma Sea Lions swept the Biola Eagles in the quarterfinal matchup of the PacWest Championship Thursday at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Club.
The score was a misleading indicator of the closeness of the contest as Point Loma was neck-and-neck with Biola throughout doubles. All-PacWest partners
Tyler Davis and
Nabeel Khan were the first to grab a win, taking a narrow 7-5 victory on Court No. 1 to give Point Loma the edge.
The Sea Lions clinched the doubles point thanks to the Alex Squared combo.
Alexander Leischner and
Alejandro Castaneda also came out with a 7-5 win, just seven minutes after Davis and Khan, to give PLNU a 1-0 lead over the Eagles.
Davis flexed his All-PacWest play in singles as well, capitalizing on early momentum to win in straight sets 6-4, 6-3.
Castaneda backed him up, with Point Loma's third point, recording a win 6-4, 6-3 as well.
His doubles partner, Leischner, was just three minutes behind with the clinching point, earning a 7-5, 6-4 win on Court No. 3 to advance Point Loma to the Semifinals on Thursday.
While the other three matches were left unfinished,
David Strassburger had sustained good momentum, forcing a third set on Court No. 2.
Point Loma will take on another Southern California foe on Friday, advancing to play at 9:00 am on Friday against #2 Azusa Pacific for a chance to go to the Championship round.
