SAN DIEGO-Everything went right as the Point Loma Sea Lions (35-5 overall, 17-7 PacWest) shutout the Hawai'i Hilo Vulcans (25-15 overall, 13-13 PacWest) 17-0 and 4-0 for a doubleheader sweep to open the four-game series Friday at Carroll B. Land Stadium.
Baxter Halligan tossed five scoreless innings before Point Loma's offense made it lopsided for a 17-0 route in the series opener. Dylan Miller backed it up with six scoreless innings before Zach Veen and Cole Hillier combined to close out the 4-0 win later in the afternoon.
After a scoreless first inning, Halligan drew a walk to start the second before Jack Malone lined a two-run homer straight over the window in the right-center for a 2-0 lead.
Halligan and Malone started the rally again in the fourth as they both reached on free passes.
After Jason Dumont's RBI single scored Halligan, Otto Kemp walked to force home Malone for a 4-0 lead.
But the inning wasn't done until Hunter Otjen's two-run single off of the third basemen stretched the advantage to 6-0, while Otjen was caught trying to stretch it into a double to end the inning. Halligan had more than enough room and completed his outing after five innings, while stifling the Vulcans, striking out 8 in the 2-hit performance.
Point Loma poured it on from there as Jakob Christian doubled to start the bottom of the fifth and came around after the Halligan and Malone combo delivered consecutive singles.
Dumont's RBI groundout pushed the lead to 8-0, by scoring Halligan, and Izayah Alvarez ripped a two-run single to make it 10-0.
Kemp added an RBI single and scored after consecutive knocks from Scott Anderson and Otjen.
Christian's second hit of the inning brought home, Anderson before Malone tacked on the final shot of the inning, a two-run triple that gave Point Loma a 15-0 lead.
Matthew Schlesener took over on the mound for Point Loma and used just 32 pitches to get through three innings, holding Hilo to just one hit.
James Halpin deposited the final two runs of the game, a screaming line drive over the right-field fence, that made it 17-0.
Andrew Meyer worked a scoreless ninth to seal the win.
While Point Loma's pitching was equally stifling in game two behind starter Dylan Miller, the offense struggled to mount a rally against Christian DeJesus and the game was scoreless into the fourth inning.
Hilo had a majority of the baserunners from the start of the game, as the Vulcans put two runners on in each of the first two innings but couldn't crack the run column against Miller.
The right-hander settled in by retiring 8 in a row from the end of the second through the fifth inning, long enough for Point Loma to grab the lead in the fourth.
After a walk to Otjen, Christian was plunked in front of Halligan. The lefty laced a double off of the center-field wall, scoring Otjen and pushing Christian to third. Dumont's sacrifice fly eventually scored Christian to make it 2-0. Hilo threatened again in the fifth with a pair of singles that were broken up by a double play.
The 2nd single of the inning, by speedster Casey Yamauchi, was promptly erased on a stolen base attempt as he was cut down by PLNU catcher Jake Entrekin's perfect throw.
In the bottom of the fifth, Kemp was a one-man show.
After a leadoff single, Kemp stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch, and came home on a wild pitch after two were out to push PLNU's lead to 3-0.
Miller surrendered a leadoff single to start the sixth, but on the strikeout of Joseph Gallagher, the ball got away from Entrekin to put the runner Lucas Sakay in motion toward second. Enterkin raced to the ball as it careened away from him, scooped it up, and fired a dart to second for an incredible double play.
Miller would finish the sixth for a scoreless outing.
Zach Veen entered and delivered two more innings of scoreless relief and Point Loma tacked on a run in the bottom of the 8th on back-to-back doubles by Halligan and Malone.
Cole Hillier, working for the first time in three weeks, shook off the rust for a scoreless outing, punching out two batters in the ninth.
Point Loma will close out the series against Hawai'i Hilo on Saturday with a 9-inning/7-inning doubleheader beginning at noon.
