SAN DIEGO– The Point Loma Sea Lions (15-6 overall) rebounded in a big way, beating the Concordia Eagles (8-11 overall) 6-1 Tuesday afternoon on the Point Loma Tennis Courts.
In doubles play, the women exuded confidence in conference play despite rearrangements in the Sea Lion pairings.
Rachel Whittington and
Faith Pearson paired up together for the first time this season but the duo looked comfortable as they took over court 3 with a quick and clean 6-0 victory.
Court 2 finished soon thereafter in favor of PLNU, tallying
Samantha Neilson's 8th consecutive win in doubles. The combo of Neilson and
Angelique Friedrich have won 7 straight matches and continued to impress in their 6-3 win on Tuesday.
Amanda Letzring and
Arianna Audelo were on the way to a victory with a 5-3 lead before their match was left suspended due to PLNU clinching the doubles point.
"The team came out focused with good energy today, which they proved with strong doubles play." Said Point Loma head coach
Curt Wheeler. "It is easy to keep doing something well rather than trying to bounce back so the hot start in doubles provided confidence heading into singles."
Pearson converted her confidence into domination as she didn't lose a single game all day. After her perfect day in doubles, she won both sets 6-0, and 6-0, while improving to 7-1 over her last 8 matches.
Friedrich extended her 5 match winning streak in singles with 6-1, 6-1 sets on Court No. 3.
Neilson followed suit on Court No. 5 as she overtook Alicia De Re 6-0, 6-3. These wins added the third and fourth points for the Sea Lions, clinching the match for Point Loma.
The Sea Lions built a 5-0 lead with Letzring quickly taking the match on Court No. 4 in straight sets 6-0, 6-3 over Concordia's Kimia Rahmani.
A tight competition on Court No. 1 split the first two sets. Audelo's bounce back in set two shifted the momentum after a tight 7-5 defeat to a dominating 6-1 victory. She easily regrouped to wrap up the match with a 10-4 tiebreak victory.
The Sea Lions will wrap up their home schedule with Senior Day on Saturday when they host the Biola Eagles on the PLNU Tennis Courts with the festivities beginning at 10:50 am. The first serve is scheduled for 11:00 am. Stay up to date with all of Point Loma Athletics at plnusealions.com.
