OAKLAND, Calif.-A double-digit offensive explosion salvaged the Point Loma Sea Lions (29-5 overall, 11-5 PacWest) first series split of the season as they rebounded from an 8-5 loss with a 13-3 victory over the Academy of Art Urban Knights (11-27 overall, 5-19 PacWest) Saturday afternoon at Laney College.
While the incredible run of 8 consecutive series victories comes to an end, the Sea Lions have opened the season without losing a series against nine different opponents, continuing the best mark in program history.
For the second straight day, the Academy of Art took the early lead, and the Urban Knights put together scoring innings in each of the first three innings to build a 4-0 advantage.
Point Loma finally broke through in the fourth as
Baxter Halligan's RBI single plated
Hunter Otjen, making it a three-run game.
But Art U extended their advantage in the 6
th with a two-run rally that included a trio of singles, they added one more in the 7
th as well on a solo home run by Charles Morgan which made it a 7-1 ballgame.
The Sea Lions answered back in the top of the 8
th with a pair of sacrifice flies from
Jack Malone and
Izayah Alvarez but the Urban Knight immediately responded with another run in the bottom of the inning for an 8-3 lead into the 9
th.
Point Loma's best offensive inning of game 1 came in the ninth as they quickly loaded the bases and tallied a run on
Easton Waterman's single into left field.
With the bags still loaded,
Jack Malone roped a ball off the top of the right-field fence, but as the runners needed to wait to see the ball drop, the confusion only saw one Sea Lion score and another thrown out on the bases, stalling the rally.
Despite the tying run at the plate, Point Loma could not bring it any closer in an 8-5 loss.
They bounced right back for the series finale, but Art U scored first for the third time in four games, as a sacrifice fly made it a 1-0 deficit for PLNU at the end of the first.
The Sea Lions woke from their slumber in the 2
nd, capitalizing on a series of walks plus an error to push across four runs, including a two-run single by
Scott Anderson that pushed Art U's starter from the ballgame.
The onslaught continued as the Sea Lions loaded the bases one batter later, and
Jakob Christian continued his clutch freshman campaign by crushing his 2
nd grand slam of the season.
With an 8-1 lead, Point Loma added three more runs in the third as Anderson brought home
Otto Kemp with a double and later scored on a double by Halligan. Malone's RBI groundout stretched the lead to 11-1.
Art U added a run in the bottom of the third but Point Loma responded in the top of the 5
th after
Easton Waterman's two-run single into left.
With a 13-2 lead, the Urban Knights added a run in the bottom of the fifth before
Connor Hill and
Andrew Meyer combined for 2.1 innings of scoreless relief to secure the fifth win of the season for
Jack Gonzales.
Gonzales is a perfect 5-0 after weathering 11 hits in 4.2 innings but striking out six.
Point Loma will return to Southern California but complete its road trip on Friday, April 15
th with a conference doubleheader against Biola. They will return to Carroll B. Land Stadium on Saturday to complete the PacWest series.
