SEA LIONS HIT MILESTONES IN DH SWEEP OF FPU

FRESNO, Calif.-While they need every win to assure themselves of a PacWest title, the Point Loma Sea Lions (41-7 overall, 23-7 PacWest) added to the record books during a doubleheader sweep of the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (27-21 Overall, 16-14 PacWest) Tuesday night at the FPU Diamond.

Point Loma's 6-2 win in game one was highlighted by another strong start from Baxter Halligan who tied the PacWest record with his 11th win of the year. Game two was much less friendly to pitchers and the freshman combo of Jakob Christian and Jake Entrekin combined for 11 RBI in PLNU's 18-15 victory.

Christian's 7 RBI performance, which gave him 9 on the day, ties him for the 3rd highest RBI total in a single game in the program's history.

While the offense carried Point Loma through, the day started a lot slower offensively.

Otto Kemp extended his season-long on-base streak to start the game, but Point Loma failed to score in the first.

Fresno Pacific, meanwhile, jumped on the board with a solo homer run in the bottom of the first for a 1-0 lead.

Sloppy play on both sides plagued the next inning, with Fresno extending the lead in the bottom of the second on a balk to stretch their lead to 2-0.

PLNU benefitted from a pair of Sunbirds' miscues, as a pair of errors helped Point Loma even the game at 2.

Halligan kept Fresno Pacific in check from there, tossing three scoreless innings, for a six-inning outing, while mixing in four strikeouts to stand in line for the win.

PLNU tacked on single runs in the 7th and 8th, with Christian belting a solo homer and Scott Anderson delivering a sacrifice fly.

Zach Veen carried the torch for the final three innings, keeping FPU scoreless to earn his 4th save of the season.

While the win was littered with individual milestones, it clinched the first 40-win season for a Point Loma Baseball team in the NCAA Era. The last 40-win season for PLNU came in 2010.

In between games, the wind picked up, swirling throughout the FPU Diamond. Point Loma's offense charged in front during the 2nd inning. Scott Anderson's bases-loaded single plated the first two runs of the game right in front of Christian's three-run blast to put Point Loma up 5-0.

FPU got a run back against Dylan Miller in the bottom of the inning on a solo homer, but PLNU maintained the 5-1 advantage.

Jake Entrekin belted a two-run homer in the fourth, extending the PLNU lead to 7-1 but FPU marched right back in the bottom of the inning with a five-run frame.

Holding a narrow one-run lead, Christian and Entrekin regained the breathing room in the fifth. Christian drove in two more runs with a single, later scoring on Entrekin's sacrifice fly to make it 10-6 PLNU.

Fresno Pacific delivered another quick response with three more runs in the bottom of the fourth to pull within one run at 10-9.

The freshman combo powered another big inning for Point Loma in the top of the fifth, as Christian singled in two more runs while Entrekin walked with the bases loaded to force home a run. Point Loma's first four runs of the inning were
created by just the one hit coming from Christian.

That was before Izayah Alvarez drove in two more with a single up the middle, pushing PLNU's lead to 16-9. Otto Kemp backed that up with an RBI single for an eight-run lead.

FPU got two runs back in the bottom of the 7th, but Point Loma still held a 17-11 lead.

Jack Malone's sacrifice fly in the top of the 8th made it 18-11 but the Sunbirds made it close again in the bottom of the 8th with a grand slam to cut Point Loma's lead to 18-15.

With a runner on base, Point Loma turned to their closer in the 8th inning and Cole Hillier delivered with a key strikeout while Entrekin cut down the would-be base stealer at third to end the inning on a double play.

Hillier kept the roll going in the ninth, striking out the first two batters he faced before an errant pitch landed FPU its lone baserunner against the Point Loma closer. Hillier bounced back with a game-ending strikeout for his 12th save of the season, tying him for the 3rd most saves in a single PLNU season, one off the program record.

It was a day filled with entries into the record book as Baxter Halligan's 11th win ties the PacWest record while pushing him into a tie for fourth in the PLNU record books for single-season victories.

Christian's run production tied him for third in PLNU for RBI in a single game. The school record was set by Micah Pries, also against FPU, in April of 2018.

Point Loma concludes the regular season in search of the PacWest title, heading into the day tied with Azusa Pacific. While APU wraps up their regular season against Biola in Azusa, PLNU concludes the series with the Sunbirds in Fresno with a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 pm.
