SAN DIEGO-While showcasing every reason why they were ranked as the top team in the region throughout the year, the Point Loma Sea Lions (46-7 overall) mashed their way to a sweep of the Northwest Nazarene Nighthawks (36-20 overall) 7-4 and 21-5 to advance to the NCAA Super Regional at the Point.
The only thing the Sea Lions lost all weekend was the coin flip, which had them designated as the visiting team for the first game despite being on their own field.
"I don't think I've ever been happier for anyone," Point Loma Head Coach
Justin James said. "Let alone a whole group. They deserve this. They've worked so hard and bought into so many different things. They've just done a great job. It's a great feeling."
Point Loma took the home-field advantage quite literally, as
Otto Kemp added another iconic moment to his illustrious Sea Lion career with a leadoff homer at Carroll B. Land Stadium.
Kemp scored in the third inning to double the PLNU lead after
Baxter Halligan singled him home.
By the time Kemp came up in the fourth, the bases were loaded with Sea Lions and the third basemen delivered, driving in a run with a single up the middle.
After overcoming a four-run deficit against Cal Poly Pomona on Thursday, the Northwest Nazarene offense got going with two outs in the bottom of the fourth thanks to an Alex Salsman homer over the center-field batter's eye.
Point Loma created its biggest lead without a hit. The Sea Lions utilized a walk and a hit batter before a pair of wild pitches and a sac fly produced their first crooked number of the game.
Parker Price and Hayden Keller both hit solo homers in the bottom of the fifth to grab those runs back for the Nighthawks.
The Sea Lions and Nighthawks traded runs in the 7
th before
Cole Hillier secured the final six outs.
Hillier's 14
th save of the season sets a new Point Loma and PacWest mark for single-season saves, while simultaneously pushing Point Loma to the brink of a berth into the Super Regional
Point Loma's offense started with a bang, as Kemp delivered déjà vu with a leadoff homer.
Scott Anderson made it back to back with a blast and
Jack Malone added a three-run homer later in the inning to stake
Jack Gonzales to a five-run lead.
Northwest Nazarene got two of those back in the top half of the 2
nd with a two-run homer by Kyle Payne.
But the Sea Lions flexed their offense again. With runners on 1
st and 3
rd, a failed pick-off saw the ball kick away from the Nighthawks' first baseman, with
Izayah Alvarez bolting to the plate to score the first run of the inning. One batter later, Otjen drove a ball over the wall in the right field to extend PLNU's lead to 8-2.
It seemed as if Point Loma's five-run first inning would be their biggest of the game, but they put together an even more impressive rally in the third. Malone hit a towering solo shot to get things rolling, his second of the game putting the Sea Lions up 9-2.
PLNU then went on to plate another five batters in the third all with two outs. Kemp doubled home Alvarez, and Anderson followed that up with an RBI single to put Point Loma up nine. Malone wasn't the only one to hit his second home run of the game in the third, as Otjen capped off the mammoth inning with a three-run jack that put PLNU up 14-2.
The Nighthawks answered back in the following innings. Â Solo homers in the fourth, fifth, and sixth trimmed PLNU's lead to 14-5 before Point Loma responded again.
In the meantime, Gonzales finished his start after six innings of good work, weathering the windy conditions with 8 K's and limiting the Nighthawks to 6 hits despite four solo homers to stand in line for his eighth win of the season.
"We've talked a lot as a group," Gonzales said. "It comes down to just winning one pitch at a time. Just taking care of business, and knowing as the pitcher on the mound, that you have to have your boys back.
PLNU added a single run in the 7
th on Kemp's 2
nd homer of the game and the 7
th PLNU homer of the game.
The Sea Lions did further damage in the eighth sending ten more to the plate in what amounted to a six-run frame, this time without a homer.
Anderson and Otjen each finished the game with 5 RBI while Malone tacked on 4. The Sea Lions had four different guys with three-hit games.
On the mound, Otjen worked a pair of scoreless frames before
Cayden Rana worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning to advance Point Loma to the Super Regional next week.
The pair of wins on Friday push Point Loma to a new record with 46 wins on the season. The 9 homer day gives the Sea Lions 73 on the season, one shy of the program record set in 2009.
"This is just incredible," James said. "It's an accumulation of the right guys on the bus in the right seats. When you get that going, and they all believe in each other and don't freak out and limit free bases and grind pitchers down. When they celebrate all the small things, good things happen."
Point Loma will now await the winner of Cal State Monterey Bay and Azusa Pacific to see who will visit The Point for a best of 3 series in the Super Regional next week.
