(SAN RAFAEL, CALIF.) PLNU Women's Volleyball completed a perfect opening weekend to PacWest play, sweeping Dominican 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 25-11) on Saturday afternoon in San Rafael to make it two conference wins from two for the Sea Lions.
Â
"We didn't play our brand of volleyball in this one, but I'm still happy to get a win any way that we can find it," Head Coach
Jonathan Scott said.
Â
The Sea Lions started quickly by scoring the first four points of the match, with three kills from
Abigail Nua and a service ace from
Courtney Dyer.
Â
Dominican fought back to take a 9-8 lead, only for Point Loma to go on runs of at least 3-0 in each of the next four rotations to handily win the opening set.
Â
With the second set tied at 13 apiece,
Jordyn Moriarty served during a 6-0 Sea Lion run that gave PLNU firm control. Dominican got to within two at 19-17, but a
Claire Smith kill and another Dyer service ace helped Point Loma take a two-set-to-none advantage.
Â
The Sea Lions then saved their best set for last, hitting a match high .448 as a team while holding the hosts to just two kills on -.154 hitting.
Â
Tied 4-4 in the third, three
Bailey Williams kills and a pair of Nua service aces as part of another 6-0 streak helped PLNU (7-3 overall, 2-0 PacWest) never look back on its way to a second-straight sweep to begin conference play.
Â
Nua (16 kills),
Lauren Phillips (23 assists), Dyer (16 digs, four aces) and
Grace Hicks (five blocks) led all players in those respective categories.
Â
Point Loma returns to PacWest action next Saturday, Sep. 17 when the Sea Lions travel to take on Concordia University Irvine. First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m.
