FIRST-HALF GOALS PROPEL PLNU WOMEN'S SOCCER

Two first-half goals propelled No. 7 PLNU Women's Soccer to a comprehensive 2-0 road win at Cal State Los Angeles on Saturday evening.

"We scored early which was nice," Head Coach Kristi Kiely said. "We asked the girls to keep a clean sheet and to take chances well because you usually don't get a lot of chances against Cal State LA."

Alison Pepper scored the Sea Lions' first goal of the evening and her first of the season in the 23rd minute, on an assist by Olivia Shaw.

"Bethany Arabe got past her defender and served a ball in the box perfectly for Liv to run onto," Kiely said. "Liv hit it back post where Pep was waiting to touch it in."

Zoe Crockett then scored her team-leading third goal of her freshman campaign in the 32nd minute with a sleek finish out of the air from an Alana Diaz cross.

"Alana had a great individual effort to separate from her defender and send a ball into the box that Zoe got a foot on and sent into the back of the net," Kiely said.

Those were the only two goals of the game, as PLNU's defense kept a shutout for the second time this season. The Sea Lions doubled up the Golden Eagles in shots, 10-5, and held an 11-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Point Loma (4-0-2 overall) concludes its non-conference schedule with two matches against conference opponents that will not count toward the PacWest standings.

PLNU is set to host Concordia University Irvine on Wednesday at 1 p.m. before traveling to Azusa Pacific on Sep. 24 for a 5 p.m. kickoff.

"We're heading into a tough week against two really good teams in non-countable conference games," Kiely said. "It's always tricky having games that both don't matter towards your conference standings but always seem to carry some weight because they are conference opponents.

"We've continued to get better and better and will use this week to stay on that trend as we prep for conference play."
