SEA LIONS CAN'T SLOW DOWN STREAKING PENGUINS

(SAN RAFAEL, Calif.) Back on Dec. 3, PLNU Women's Basketball handed Dominican its second-straight loss to begin PacWest play.

Since then, the Penguins have rallied off 10-consecutive victories in the conference, including against the Sea Lions on Thursday night by a 78-69 margin.

Maddie Mersch's jumper gave the Sea Lions an early 11-10 advantage, but that was the only lead they held, as Dominican led by five after the first quarter before doubling up Point Loma's score in the second period.

The Penguins took a 15-point lead into the halftime interval, before the Sea Lions won the second half, cutting their deficit to as little as five after opening the third quarter on a 14-4 run.

Allie Carreon's 3-pointer later made it a six-point game with a minute remaining in the third, but Dominican restored its double-digit advantage going into the fourth with a last-second jumper before the buzzer sounded.

The Penguins then extended their lead to as many as 13 in the final quarter. Eiley Tippins' basket brought PLNU back to within six with 1:31 remaining, only for Dominican to make eight free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.

Carreon led the Sea Lions with 23 points, shooting 4-for-8 from 3-point range, while Ellie Turk (13 points) and Mersch (10 points) joined her in double figures.

Tippins (nine points, 10 rebounds) and Haylee Saurette (nine points, seven rebounds) nearly posted double-doubles.

Point Loma (8-12 overall, 6-6 PacWest) returns to the court on Saturday when PLNU takes on Academy of Art at 1 p.m.
