(HONOLULU) No. 21 PLNU Men's Basketball extended its winning streak to 10 and maintained its unbeaten start to PacWest play with a hard-fought 84-80 road win at Chaminade on Saturday.
Â
"I couldn't be prouder of our guys for today's gutsy win," Head Coach
Matt Logie said. "It was our third game in five days, minus two of our perimeter guys against a very talented group of guards from Chaminade."
Â
Down a couple of key players, Point Loma got a career night from
Luke Haupt and a vintage performance from
Kaden Anderson.
Â
Haupt poured in a career-high 26 points to lead the Sea Lions, while Anderson posted his sixth double-double of the season with 20 points and 11 rebounds.
Â
"Luke was phenomenal today, attacking under control and finishing as well while defending all over the place," Logie said.
Â
After Haupt beat the first-half buzzer to put PLNU up by five at the half, the Sea Lions threatened to run away with the game in the second period with a lead as many as eight.
Â
But the Silverswords wouldn't go away easily, getting to within one and then missing a go-ahead 3-pointer in the closing seconds.
Â
Coby Barnes corralled the defensive rebound and was fouled, before sinking both free throws on the other end to seal the victory and Point Loma's perfect three-game trip to Hawaii.
Â
Joining Haupt and Anderson in double figures were
Shamrock Campbell and
Brian Goracke, who added 15 and 12 points respectively. Barnes (seven points) and
Wes Slajchert (four points) rounded out PLNU's scoring.
Â
"I'm really proud of the way Coby and Wes stepped up," Logie said of Barnes and Slajchert, who normally play significant minutes off the bench but were thrust into even larger roles on Saturday.
Â
Point Loma (14-3 overall, 9-0 PacWest) now returns home to Golden Gym on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. for a crucial matchup against Azusa Pacific (12-3, 7-1), who sit just behind PLNU in the conference standings.
