SEA LIONS WIN IT LATE AGAINST VULCANS

PLNU MEN'S SOCCER FINISHES HAWAI'I TRIP A PERFECT 3-0

(HILO, Hawai'i) Saturday's game at Hawai'i Hilo was a special occasion for PLNU Men's Soccer.

Not only did Point Loma have the opportunity to sweep the Hawai'i PacWest schools, but it was also a homecoming for Kupa'a Fernandez, Kaelele Fernandez and Finn Simmersbach, as well as Felix Calero's 21st birthday.

The birthday boy ensured the Sea Lions went home happy.

After a late Vulcans goal canceled out Elijah Langford's opener, PLNU won a penalty kick with just 66 seconds remaining in regulation following a UH Hilo handball.

Calero then confidently stepped up and buried his spot kick to earn yet another three points for Point Loma as the Sea Lions continue to push for a first-ever PacWest championship.

"I'm so proud of the guys, as we put together three really good performances in Hawaii," Head Coach Phil Wolf said. "Each venue is complicated and to perform well and get full points is an incredible feat."

Langford opened the scoring with his fourth goal of the season, after Niko Kaczmarczyk found the freshman inside the box to take a touch and finish with his left foot past the opposing goalkeeper.

UH Hilo then found an unlucky equalizer in the 86th minute off a long throw-in before Calero's third PLNU goal won it for the Sea Lions, who outshot the Vulcans 12-4.

"We have finally solved some issues at the back and look to be a better built team," Wolf said.

Point Loma (9-4 overall, 5-1 PacWest) now returns home for three-straight games, beginning on Oct. 30 at 1 p.m. against the team right below it in the PacWest standings, Dominican (6-4-3, 4-1-1).

"We look forward to a week off of competition and another tough game against a top team in Dominican the following Monday," Wolf said.
