(IRVINE, Calif.) Just as it did on Friday, PLNU Women's Basketball's offense exploded in the second half on Saturday against Simon Fraser.
Â
Point Loma outscored SFU by nine points in the second half, 49-40, but it wasn't enough to overturn an 11-point halftime deficit as the Red Leafs prevailed 85-83.
Â
Four Sea Lions scored in double figures, led by
Ellie Turk's second 20-plus point game in her last three. Turk led all scorers with 24, followed by 15 apiece from
Eiley Tippins and
Tavia Rowell, as well as 12 from
Hannah Golan.
Â
PLNU shot 50% or above from 3-point range for the second-straight game, with Turk sinking five triples and Rowell shooting a perfect 4-from-4 from behind the arc.
Â
Point Loma led by as many as eight in the first quarter after a Tippins basket, before Turk's 3-pointer in the final seconds put PLNU up by five heading into the second period.
Â
The Red Leafs then outscored the Sea Lions 28-12 in the second quarter to go into the break up by double digits.
Â
Point Loma stormed back in the third, as Turk's triple with 3:20 remaining in the quarter restored PLNU's lead momentarily, with SFU leading by two entering the fourth.
Â
Simon Fraser then scored the first six points of the final period to change the momentum before stretching its lead back up to 11 with 2:41 to play.
Â
A late flurry of 3's got the Sea Lions back in the game late, as Rowell's triple got PLNU to within two with a second remaining, but the Red Leafs managed to hold on in the end.
Â
Point Loma (2-4 overall) returns to the court on Saturday when PLNU hosts Hope International at 2 p.m. for its home opener.
