PLNU BATTLES NO. 1 DIVISION III TEAM

(SAN DIEGO) No. 21 PLNU Women's Tennis won the doubles point against the No. 1 team in NCAA Division III, but Claremont-Mudd-Scripps came back to edge Point Loma by a 5-2 margin.

"Playing against one of the best DIII teams in the nation, the ladies team put up a strong effort," Head Coach Curt Wheeler said. "The women started the match well by securing the doubles point, but unfortunately lots of the close singles sets didn't go our way."

The Athenas claimed the first doubles match to finish, at No. 3, with the other two matchups locked in close battles.

Arianna Audelo's backhand, crosscourt winner put her and Amanda Letzring up 6-5 at No. 1 doubles, before the duo also won the next game to even the doubles score.

All eyes were then on Rachel Whittington and Angelique Friedrich at No. 2. Trailing 5-6, and down 0-30 in the potentially-deciding game, the PLNU pairing stormed back to win the next four points and force a tiebreak.

Whittington's volley then gave her and Friedrich an 8-6 victory in the tiebreak to give Point Loma a 1-0 lead after doubles.

However, the visitors came back to win the first five singles matches to finish, before Thelma Sepulveda won at No. 5. Sepulveda took the first set 6-2, then dropped the second 4-6, but dominated the super tiebreak 10-3.

All five other singles matches were tightly-contested, with Friedrich losing a first-set tiebreak, and Audelo and Joelle Lanz nearly forcing their own at No. 1 and 2 respectively.

Letzring (4-6, 5-7) and Pearson (4-6, 4-6) were also more than competitive at No. 4 and No. 6.

Point Loma (1-2 overall) now shifts its attention to its next match on Tuesday, when the Sea Lions host Westcliff at noon.
