(SEASIDE, Calif.) Fourth-ranked PLNU Baseball beat No. 25 Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday, 9-6, before the second game was rained out, giving the Sea Lions wins in all three games played.
Point Loma raced out to a 6-0 lead before giving up a run, with PLNU scoring twice in each of the second, fourth and fifth innings.
Jack Malone and
Will Pope each singled in runs in the second inning, with the duo then knocking in runs again in the fourth, with Malone hitting another RBI-single and Pope's sacrifice bunt scoring another.
Jakob Christian then hit a two-run homer in the fifth, his fourth homer of the series and team-leading sixth of the season.
The Otters scored twice themselves in the bottom of the inning, and added another in the sixth, to cut their deficit in half.
PLNU responded with a
Hunter Otjen solo shot in the seventh and a Christian RBI-triple in the eighth.
CSUMB got one back in the bottom half, before Malone recorded his third run-scoring single of the game in the top of the ninth.
With the Sea Lions leading 9-4 and just three outs away from a third-straight victory in the series, the Otters scored twice and had the bases loaded with two outs, only for
Cole Hillier to strike out a batter to strand the winning run at the plate.
Starting pitcher
Cole Colleran pitched four shutout innings and struck out three hitters.
Point Loma (7-1 overall) returns to Carroll B. Land Stadium on Friday to take on Cal State San Bernardino in a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.
