(SAN DIEGO) No. 23 PLNU Men's Tennis overcame multiple weather delays to defeat visiting Westcliff, 5-2, on Tuesday night.
Â
The match was originally scheduled for 3 p.m. but was pushed back more than two hours because of rain. The teams had to wait out a rain delay during singles play as well, but in the end the Sea Lions came away with their second-straight win to start the season.
Â
Point Loma took the doubles point with wins in all three doubles matches.
Â
David Strassburger and
Lukas Schuster cruised at No. 3 doubles, winning 6-2.
Alexander Leischner and
Tyler Davis then clinched the doubles point for PLNU with their 7-5 victory at No. 1, breaking their opponents' serve while leading 6-5 to win the match.
Â
For good measure,
Fabian Penzkofer and
Nabeel Khan won their No. 2 doubles contest, with Penzkofer's backhand giving the Sea Lion pairing a 7-6 victory in a tiebreak.
Â
Â
Westcliff picked up the first singles point to tie the overall match, only for Leischner to quickly restore Point Loma's lead with a comprehensive 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles.
Â
After
Tyler Davis won his first set 7-5, PLNU's No. 2 singles player was leading 4-2 in the second set when rain forced a stoppage in play. When play resumed, he wasted no time in finishing off the second set by a 6-2 margin.
Â
Strassburger dropped his first set at No. 4, 1-6, before storming back to win the second, 6-2, and force a deciding third set. He continued that momentum by racing out to a 3-0 lead in the third, on his way to securing Point Loma's team victory by winning the final set, 6-3.
Â
Penzkofer claimed a 6-2 first set victory at No. 3 but found himself trailing 5-6 in the second. He battled back to force a tiebreak and win the second set, 7-6.
Â
With the overall match result already decided,
Matt Melosch put up a valiant effort at No. 6 singles, overturning a 4-6 first set loss to win the second set by the same margin and force a super tiebreak. The junior transfer then saved at least seven match points before falling 14-16.
Â
Point Loma (2-0 overall) will next hit the road for the first time this season, when the Sea Lions travel to play Azusa Pacific on Friday at 2 p.m. in a matchup between two teams picked to finish second and third in the PacWest this season.
