(LOS ANGELES) No. 20 PLNU Women's Tennis overcame the elements to defeat Cal State Los Angeles on the road on Wednesday afternoon, 5-2.
Â
"The women's team earned a tough win today against CSULA," Head Coach
Curt Wheeler said. "A rain delay at the start of the match, consistent 20-25 mph winds and cold temperatures made today a challenge. But the ladies were up for the challenge and responded well today."
Â
The Golden Eagles won the first doubles match to finish, before the Sea Lions claimed the doubles point by winning the other two matchups in a tiebreak.
Â
Angelique Friedrich and
Joelle Lanz combined to win 7-6 at No. 2, while
Faith Pearson and
Rachel Whittington followed that up with a 7-6 victory of their own at No. 3.
Â
Â
CSULA tied the overall match by winning at No. 6 singles, only for
Thelma Sepulveda to give PLNU the lead right back with her comprehensive 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 5.
Â
Arianna Audelo (7-5, 6-1) and Friedrich (6-1, 6-1) then won to help Point Loma claim the team victory with their individual wins at No. 1 and 3 respectively.
Â
Lanz capped off PLNU's scoring on the day, winning a first-set tiebreak before not losing a single game in the second set in her 7-6, 6-0 win at No. 2.
Â
Point Loma (4-3 overall) has now won two-straight matches for the first time this season and will look to keep its winning streak going on Saturday with a scheduled home match against Academy of Art at 11 a.m.
