(SAN DIEGO) The slimmest of margins separated PLNU Women's Tennis and No. 19 Azusa Pacific on Saturday afternoon.
Â
Nothing highlighted that more than doubles court No. 2.
Â
After
Thelma Sepulveda and
Rachel Whittington claimed a 6-3 win at No. 3, APU won the No. 1 doubles match to set up a winner-take-all No. 2 matchup.
Â
Joelle Lanz and
Angelique Friedrich held set point, leading 7-6 in a tiebreak, before the Cougars won three-straight points to snatch the doubles point away from the Sea Lions.
Â
That doubles point proved to be the difference in the match, with APU claiming a narrow 4-3 win over PLNU.
Â
The visitors won the first two singles matches to finish at No. 1 and 3, needing just one more victory to clinch the overall match.
Â
But the hosts delayed that outcome, with Whittington (6-1, 6-2), Lanz (6-3, 6-4) and Sepulveda (7-6, 6-2) winning at No. 6, 2 and 4 respectively to level the match at 3-3.
Â
Amanda Letzring then forced a third set at No. 5, bouncing back from a 7-5 first-set defeat to win the second set, 6-4.
Â
But APU ultimately claimed the third and final set, 6-4, to win the match.
Â
Point Loma (11-5 overall) will look to avenge its March 18 defeat to Concordia on Tuesday when the Sea Lions travel to take on the Golden Eagles in Irvine at 1 p.m.
