(SAN DIEGO) PLNU Volleyball opened up PacWest play with a three-set sweep of Dominican in front of a rocking Golden Gym on Wednesday night, winning by set scores of 25-21, 25-21, 25-12.
"We played a pretty complete game all around," Head Coach
Jonathan Scott said. "We were talking about trying to be more efficient and keeping it clean. A big part of that was battling in serve-receive and keeping the ball off the floor."
The win helped Point Loma turn the page from a three-match losing streak to end the non-conference portion of its schedule and start the PacWest season on a high note.
"We were ready to get things done and really get after it in the conference this year," said
Bailey Williams, who had 10 digs on the night. "We were just really determined tonight coming into it and it's nice when you have a big crowd. It fires you up even more."
With the first set tied at 21-21, PLNU closed the opening stanza on a 4-0 run that was bookended by a pair of
Anna Massari kills.
The Sea Lions then won the second stanza by an identical 25-21 scoreline, as the Penguins saved four set points before an attacking error put the visitors on the brink.
Point Loma then raced out to a 6-0 lead in the third set and didn't look back, with
Abigail Nua posting seven of her match-high 13 kills in the final stanza to close out the sweep.
Massari and
Mariah Hughes joined her in double digits with 10 kills apiece.
Macy Reynolds paced the defensive with 11 digs, while Massari, Hommes and
Claire Smith all had four blocks each.
"We have a lot of talent and a lot of depth," Scott said. "We've tried a lot of different things and this was a fun one."
Point Loma (4-4 overall, 1-0 PacWest) returns to Golden Gym on Saturday at 2 p.m. when PLNU hosts Academy of Art in PacWest action.
