(POMONA, Calif.) PLNU Men's Soccer took an early lead on the road at No. 22 Cal Poly Pomona but three quickfire second-half goals from the Broncos proved too much for the Sea Lions to overcome, as Point Loma fell on the wrong side of a 5-3 result.
Â
"We played a top team today and we could not control their counterattack," Head Coach
Phil Wolf said. "I'm proud of the guys as we fought to the end but we have to make our group a tighter defensive team."
Â
An own goal put the Sea Lions ahead in just the seventh minute, only for the Broncos to equalize just over a minute later.
Â
The two teams then went into the halftime interval tied 1-1 before CPP exploded with three goals in an eight-minute span early in the second half, to go ahead 4-1 in the 58th minute.
Â
Juan Salazar scored his first PLNU goal from the penalty spot in the 67th to make it 4-2, before the Broncos responded with their fifth goal of the game less than two minutes later.
Â
Zachary Mercieca also scored his maiden goal in a Sea Lions' uniform, tacking on a consolation in the 88th.
Â
"We had some really good moments in the game but we were not solid enough defensively as a team to get anything out of it," Wolf said.

Point Loma (0-2 overall) returns home for the first time this season on Thursday when PLNU hosts Seattle Pacific (1-1) at 4 p.m. The two teams battled to a thrilling 3-3 draw in Seattle last season.
