(IRVINE, Calif.) Three second-half goals lifted PLNU Men's Soccer to a 3-2 road victory over Concordia in the Sea Lions' PacWest opener on Saturday afternoon.
"It's an incredible result," Head Coach
Phil Wolf said. "We played some of our best stuff of the year when we went up 3-1."
Trailing by one at the half after CUI took the lead in the 15th minute, Point Loma scored three goals in the span of 10-and-a-half minutes early in the second period to begin conference play with all three points.
Marlon Buck opened the scoring for the Sea Lions with a glancing header just over three minutes after the halftime interval.
Austin Lavell combined with
Matthew Abangan off a throw-in before whipping in a cross that found Buck's head to tie the game.
Three minutes later, Lavell was played in on the left byline to square a ball across the face of goal for
Christopher Burgos Lara to tap-in at the back post for his first goal of the season.
Then
Felix Calero rounded out the scoring for the visitors, beating a few Golden Eagles defenders in the air to head home
Juan Salazar's set-piece delivery.
The hosts got one back in the 75th minute but the Sea Lions were able to see the game out to earn a crucial three points at the start of conference play.
"We still can't put a full performance together and we put ourselves in a situation we never had to be in, so we're still a long way away from the finished product," Wolf said.
Point Loma (5-3 overall, 1-0 PacWest), winners of two-straight and five of its last six, return to PLNU Soccer Field on Saturday to host Azusa Pacific at 11:30 a.m. in PacWest action.
