VOLLEYBALL OPENS TOURNAMENT WITH WIN

(POMONA, Calif.) PLNU Volleyball opened up the CPP/APU Tournament with a four-set win (25-18, 18-25, 25-14, 25-22) over San Francisco State on Thursday afternoon.

"San Francisco State is a good team and we had to battle hard to finish the match," Head Coach Jonathan Scott said. "Our defense is improving and I'm excited to see where this team can go if we keep progressing."

The two teams split the first couple sets by identical scores before Point Loma took control of the match with a decisive third-set victory.

The Sea Lions trailed early in the fourth stanza, 10-14, before a 5-0 run that included two service aces from Sophia Baugh gave PLNU its first lead of the set.

The two teams went back and forth until consecutive kills from Abigail Nua and Claire Smith clinched the match in Point Loma's favor.

Nua led PLNU with 12 kills, followed by Anna Massari's eight and Torina Hommes' seven. Baugh and Lauren Phillips each dished out double-digit assists with 18 and 12 respectively.

Macy Reynolds led all players with 15 digs, while Massari (six blocks) and Hommes (four blocks) controlled the net.

"Tor and Anna put together a really nice collective middle performance," Scott said.

With the win, Point Loma improves to 3-1 on the young season. The Sea Lions will next play at Cal Poly Pomona at 12:30 p.m. on Friday before switching venues to Azusa, where PLNU will take on Cal State East Bay at 6 p.m.
