SEA LIONS BEAT COUGARS ON THE ROAD TO EXTEND WIN STREAK

(AZUSA, Calif.) An early goal from Alana Diaz and a second half header from Lily Larez clinched all three points for No. 15 PLNU Women's Soccer at Azusa Pacific, as the Sea Lions defeated the Cougars 2-0 to continue their perfect start to conference play.

"It was a total team performance tonight and I'm very proud of our entire group," Head Coach Kristi Kiely said. "APU is a good side and we had to battle for this one. It was a great picture of applying some lessons learned from earlier in the year."

Diaz scored in just the second minute of the game, giving Point Loma the perfect start on the road.

Jillian Tubbs slipped a through ball at the box to Diaz, who buried her right-footed shot into the back of the net just 1:34 into the match.

"I thought APU started the game very well and we were under it for the couple of minutes until we put the ball in the back of the net," Kiely said. "Jill played a fantastic ball to Alana who had a clinical finish. I thought we played some good football in the first half."

PLNU continued to pressure the APU goal, forcing five saves the rest of the first half, before Larez doubled the Sea Lions' lead in the 60th minute with a header.

Alyssa Ketcham provided the assist, beating her defender to the byline before lofting an inch-perfect cross to Larez at the back post.

"The second half was a lot of ball winning and battling leading to a very open game," Kiely said. "Our second goal came from a beautiful cross by Alyssa and a great finish by Lily. Alyssa's ability to get tremendous service off is always impressive."

Point Loma outshot Azusa Pacific 10-8, including 8-2 in shots on goal, as goalkeeper Julia Pinnell made a pair of saves to preserve PLNU's fifth straight shutout.

"Our backs continue to lead us in so many ways and they were tremendous tonight," Kiely said. "Zoe Crockett and Emma Thrapp dealt with everything that came their way."

With the win, the Sea Lions extended their winning streak to six matches overall.

"The entire group put in a great shift tonight," Kiely said. "Conference play is always more challenging - the emotions are high, the opponent knows more about you, there is history and we know each game will demand much from us. I'm proud of how hard our group works and proud of how they compete."

Point Loma (8-1-1 overall, 5-0 PacWest) turns its attention to Saturday's crucial conference matchup against No. 6 Concordia (7-0-1, 3-0).

CUI had won three straight against PLNU before the Sea Lions defeated the Golden Eagles in the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season on their way to winning the national championship.

Kickoff on Saturday at the PLNU Soccer Field is scheduled for 2:15 p.m.
