POINT LOMA RETURNS TO WINNING WAYS AGAINST CUI

(SAN DIEGO) No. 15 PLNU Men's Soccer got back in the win column with a 3-2 home victory over Concordia on Saturday, continuing its unbeaten start to conference play.

"I was disappointed with the way we played today, but a lot of that had to do with the way Concordia played," Head Coach Phil Wolf said. "I thought they are much improved and caused us some trouble. To find a way to win when not at your best is something championship teams can do."

After dropping points for the first time in PacWest play with Wednesday's draw at Azusa Pacific, the Sea Lions wasted no time getting on the scoreboard on Saturday.

Making his first collegiate start, James Metcalfe capitalized on the opportunity by giving the hosts an early advantage in just the fourth minute of the game.

Off a Sea Lions corner kick, the ball found its way to Milan Diklic, who cleverly back-heeled to Metcalfe to finish with the inside of his right foot for his first career Sea Lions goal.

After the visitors equalized in the 40th minute, Zach Mercieca put the hosts back in front just before halftime.

In the final minute of the first half, the Golden Eagles gave the ball away straight to Calero on the left wing.

Calero then passed inside to Mercieca, who shifted the ball onto his right foot and found the back of the net for the second straight game with a powerful right-footed effort from the top of the box.

CUI equalized once more in the second half, only for PLNU to take the lead for good in the 55th minute through Elijah Langford, less than two minutes after Concordia's second goal.

Calero registered his second assist of the day, flicking a ball over a defender's head before squaring a ball across the box for Langford to score from close range.

Point Loma (7-1-3 overall, 5-0-1 PacWest) returns to the PLNU Soccer Field on Thursday when the Sea Lions host Hawai'i Pacific at 1 p.m.

"Obviously with them not playing midweek it makes it very difficult for us physically and psychologically, but I am very proud of the boys who showed some real resiliency to find a way to get full points at home," Wolf said.
