TORRES SCORES TWICE TO LEAD PLNU OVER HPU

(SAN DIEGO) Priya Torres scored her first two collegiate goals in the second half to lead No. 24 PLNU Women's Soccer to a 2-0 victory over Hawai'i Pacific on Thursday afternoon.

"I'm pumped for her because it feels like it's been building and sometimes you just need that one to get a second and a third and a fourth," Head Coach Kristi Kiely said of Torres.

Despite outshooting HPU 15-2 in the first half, Point Loma went into the half scoreless, but that all changed after the break when Torres announced herself on the college stage.

Torres' first goal was created by Alana Diaz, who dribbled around her defender on the left wing and along the end line before cutting the ball back to the freshman forward to smash the ball into the roof of the net.

Torres then doubled the lead with a well-taken finish in the 83rd to seal the three points for the Sea Lions.

Jordyn Rodriguez played a forward ball to Bethany Arabe, who squared it to Torres to curl her first-time shot above the goalkeeper and into the net from just inside the top of the box.

"She's been close," Kiely said of Torres scoring her first collegiate goals. "She's been training well and has been sharp. Today she was just in the right spot. Alana obviously made it very easy for her on the first goal and then Bethany had a great service on the second.

"Alana continues to get on the stat sheet which is great and keeping her really active in that way I think is really positive."

PLNU outshot HPU, 29-7, while forcing eight saves and holding a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks.

"I think we do a good job of continuing to go at people in a variety of ways, continuing to have the ball and continuing to be aggressive higher up the field," Kiely said. "If we stay committed to the way that we play, then the goals will come.

"If we get away from ourselves then that gets a little bit harder, but we're not thrown off by being zeros at halftime. We don't feel worried as long as we're creating good opportunities."

The Sea Lions didn't allow a single shot on target, as goalkeeper Julia Pinnell and the PLNU defense kept their sixth shutout in the past seven matches.

With the win, Point Loma (9-2-1 overall, 6-1 PacWest) moves atop the conference standings for now with 18 points. PLNU now has over a week until its next game against Chaminade at home on Oct. 26 at 2:15 p.m.

"We need the rest," Kiely said. "The schedule in the PacWest is challenging, not just for us but for many. We need the rest, and we'll look forward to that. We'll give them what they need and then we'll be back and ready next week to face a tough Chaminade team."
