(LAS VEGAS) PLNU Women's Basketball outscored UNLV in the fourth quarter of Tuesday night's season-opening exhibition, which the Lady Rebels won by a score of 94-63.
"I'm really proud of how we fought and battled tonight," Head Coach
Charity Elliott said. "UNLV is a great team and program."
Point Loma took an early 3-2 lead after a
Tavia Rowell 3-pointer before the hosts went on a 15-0 run to take control halfway through the first.
PLNU then outscored UNLV 11-5 the rest of the opening quarter to get back to within single digits, as
Hannah Golan beat the buzzer with a spinning jumper off the glass.
The Sea Lions shot an efficient 60% from the field in the second quarter, but the Lady Rebels made 11 field goals in the period to extend their lead to 21 going into the half.
UNLV limited Point Loma's offense in the third before PLNU saved its best scoring quarter for last, putting up 22 points in the fourth. The Sea Lions went a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the final period, while holding UNLV to just three baskets in the quarter.
Four Sea Lions scored in double figures, led by
Kaylee Byon's near double-double of 13 points and eight rebounds.
Kendyl Carson (11), Rowell (10) and
Annika Thayer (10) also scored double-digit points.
"UNLV did a great job exposing the areas we need to work on," Elliott said. "That's why we play these type of games and I think we are all ready to get back in the gym and get ready for our upcoming opponents."
Point Loma will officially open its regular season on Nov. 8 against Cal State San Marcos at the PacWest/CCAA Conference Challenge in Azusa. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
