(IRVINE, Calif.) For the second time in a week, PLNU Men's Soccer dominated Fresno Pacific, but in a sense of déjà vu the fourth-seeded Sunbirds defeated the top-seeded Sea Lions, 1-0, in the PacWest Tournament semifinals on Thursday.
Â
FPU gave PLNU its only loss of the conference regular season a week ago, 1-0 with a goal in the 63rd minute, despite Point Loma holding a 17-2 advantage in shots.
Â
Then in the first ever PacWest Championships, the Sea Lions increased that shot advantage to 23-4 but somehow couldn't find the net, as the Sunbirds scored in the 63rd minute once again to win 1-0.
Â
Point Loma, the PacWest regular season champions, now awaits a possible at-large bid into the NCAA Super Region 4 tournament.
Â
PLNU and FPU battled to a scoreless first half before the Sea Lions cranked up the offensive pressure in the second, totaling 17 shots after halftime.
Â
Simon Sagal curled in a free kick for
Milan Diklic to head in at the back post, but the goal was disallowed because of a foul.
Â
Felix Calero looked lively on the left flank, cutting inside and curling his effort just wide of the far post.
Â
The Sunbirds then scored off a counterattack against the run of play and bunkered in for the remaining 27 minutes.
Â
Calero forced a save with a shot in the box, before
Christopher Burgos Lara's cross found
Elijah Langford, only for his header to be pushed wide by the opposing goalkeeper for a corner kick.
Â
Calero then skipped past a few FPU defenders and had his shot from outside the box saved.
Â
The Sea Lions forced eight saves total in the match, including six in the second half, as they were shut out for only the second time this season with both scoreless outings coming against Fresno Pacific.
Â
Point Loma (11-3-3 overall, 9-1-1 PacWest) not waits to hear its postseason fate when the NCAA Selection Show announces the Super Region 4 tournament bracket on Monday at 3:30 p.m.
