Box Score (SAN DIEGO) The Sea Lions had been here before, just a week ago in fact.
Â
Trailing against Hawai'i Hilo at halftime for the second Saturday in a row, PLNU Women's Soccer overturned a halftime deficit against the Vulcans once again, this time to win 2-1 in the NCAA West Regional Second Round.
Â
Point Loma lifted the PacWest Tournament trophy a week ago in a thrilling comeback victory over Hilo in the conference final, before two goals in 36 seconds in the second half on Saturday booked the Sea Lions' spot in the West Regional championship.
Â
The Vulcans led 1-0 at the half, only for back-to-back goals from
Bethany Arabe and
Alyssa Ketcham in the 52nd and 53rd minutes to put Point Loma in front.
Â
Â
On Arabe's equalizer, Ketcham beat her defender on the right wing and pulled a cross back to Arabe to slot home from the top of the six-yard box.
Â
Arabe then returned the favor moments later from the left flank, crossing a ball to Ketcham to head into the back of the net with what proved to be the game-winning goal.
Â
Â
PLNU created additional problems for Hilo's defense the rest of the game, as
Andrea Lozano forced a save off the goal line.
Â
The Sea Lions limited the Vulcans to just one shot on goal in the second half, with goalkeeper
Julia Pinnell making a very comfortable save with 20 seconds remaining before punting the ball away to wind out the clock.
Â
Â
Second-seeded Point Loma (17-2-1 overall) will now play top-seeded Cal Poly Pomona (18-1-2) on Saturday in Pomona at 1 p.m. with the West Regional championship on the line.
Â
The two teams played earlier this season in Pomona, with the Broncos defeating the Sea Lions, 2-1.
