(SAN DIEGO) In a rematch of the PacWest semifinals last year, Azusa Pacific prevailed over PLNU Men's Tennis on Saturday afternoon, 4-3, to spoil the Sea Lions' season opener.
Â
David Strassburger and
Elias Weeks picked up a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles, only for APU to win the other two doubles matches to claim the doubles point and take a 1-0 overall lead.
Â
That point proved crucial, as the two sides split the six singles matches evenly.
Â
Alexander Leischner took care of business at No. 1, winning in straight sets (6-3, 6-2), before Strassburger also won in straight sets (7-5, 7-6) at No. 3.
Â
Matt Melosch then overcame a 3-6 defeat in set one to win the next two sets 6-1, 7-5, meaning the result of the ongoing No. 6 singles match would determine the winner.
Â
Unfortunately for the Sea Lions, Constantin Barth of APU managed to overcome PLNU's
Lukas Schuster (3-6, 7-5, 6-4) and continue the Cougars' unbeaten start to the season.
Â
Point Loma (0-1 overall) returns to the court on Friday at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at noon.
