(SAN DIEGO) PLNU Women's Tennis made a statement to open up its 2024 season, defeating the preseason PacWest Conference favorite Azusa Pacific, 4-3, on Saturday.
The victory ends APU's 10-match winning streak in the series.
The Cougars claimed the doubles point, winning at number one and two doubles, with
Anna Pallencaoe and
Emely Valencia tied 5-5 in their No. 3 matchup.
The Sea Lions then responded by winning four of six singles matches, with
Arianna Audelo clinching the season opener with a three-set victory at No. 3.
Valencia got Point Loma on the board with a dominant 6-2, 6-0 triumph at No. 6.
Quin Brady also won in straight sets at No. 4 (6-3, 7-5) before
Thelma Sepulveda's three-set victory at No. 2 (6-1, 4-6, 6-2) moved PLNU one step closer to claiming the overall match.
Amanda Letzring played a highly competitive match at No. 1, with APU's Madison Kane escaping by a 7-6, 7-6 margin, with both sets going to a tiebreak.
Audelo then overcame a 4-6 loss in the first set to win the second set 7-5, before dominating in the third, 6-1.
Point Loma (1-0 overall) returns to the court on Wednesday at UC San Diego with doubles play set to begin at 2 p.m.
