(SAN DIEGO) Dominant outings from starting pitchers
Dylan Miller and
Ray Cebulski carried No. 8 PLNU Baseball to a doubleheader sweep of UCCS on Friday.
Miller went 7.1 innings, giving up two runs and striking out eight, in a 5-3 game one victory. Cebulski then pitched a seven-inning complete game in game two, allowing one run and striking out seven in a 4-1 win.
In the first game, Point Loma got on the board in the bottom of the third inning, when
Esai Santos' sacrifice bunt allowed
Joey Nicolai to cross home plate.
Will Pope then scored on a wild pitch to double PLNU's advantage.
The Sea Lions then tacked on three in the fourth to go up 5-0.
Bryson Hashimoto walked to lead off the bottom half, scoring on
Jake Entrekin's double to the right center field gap.
After Entrekin advanced to third on a bunt single from Nicolai, Pope plated Entrekin with a sacrifice bunt before Santos' RBI-single capped off a three-run fourth for the Sea Lions.
UCCS got a pair back in the top of the sixth on a homer to right and added another run in the ninth, but PLNU closed it out to ensure Miller won his third-straight start of the season.
In the first inning of game two, Point Loma scored on a double play groundout and then doubled their lead in the fourth on Santos' sacrifice fly.
Hunter Otjen's RBI-single through the right side and Nicolai's sacrifice fly then pushed the Sea Lions' advantage to 4-0 after five.
The Mountain Lions got on the board in the top of the sixth but could only muster the one run against a stellar Cebulski.
Point Loma (6-2 overall) and UCCS will square off again on Saturday in a doubleheader at USD's Fowler Park. The first game is scheduled to start at 10 a.m.
