SEA LIONS BEAT MAVERICKS FOR SECOND SHUTOUT WIN

(SAN DIEGO) PLNU Men's Tennis returned to winning ways with a dominant 7-0 victory over visiting Colorado Mesa on Monday afternoon for its second shutout win of the season.

Point Loma won the doubles point, with Andrew Suver and Matt Melosch winning 6-1 at No. 3 before Alexander Leischner and David Strassburger won 6-3 at No. 1 to put the Sea Lions in front.

Elias Weeks, a consistent presence in the doubles lineup, played in singles for the first time this season and picked up PLNU's first win on the day with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph at No. 6.

Leischner then won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 after leading 5-0 in the second set.

Melosch clinched the overall team victory with his 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 4. Leading 5-4 in the first, he held serve to clinch the first set before immediately going up by two breaks in the second.

Schuster won 7-5, 6-2 at No. 4 after earning a crucial break of serve while leading 6-5 in the first set.

Strassburger claimed a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 2. Leading 4-3 in the first, he broke his opponent's serve to go up 5-3 before a volley at the net gave him set point, which he clinched with a cross-court forehand that his opponent barely got a racket to.

Then in the second, his serve was broken to tie the set at 3-3, but Strassburger returned the favor right back in winning the final three games.

Suver then completed the clean sweep for the Sea Lions with a 4-6, 6-1 (10-8) super-tiebreak victory at No. 3. He rebounded from dropping the first set to lead 5-0 in the second before continuing that momentum into the super tiebreak.

Point Loma (6-3 overall) returns to the PLNU Tennis Courts on Wednesday to take on Bowdoin at 5 p.m.
