SEA LIONS SWEEP GOLDEN EAGLES TO BEGIN PACWEST PLAY

(IRVINE, Calif.) No. 25 PLNU Volleyball's unbeaten start to the season continued Thursday night into PacWest play, as Point Loma swept Concordia (25-16, 25-20, 25-19) in the conference opener for both teams.

"Concordia battled and the match was a lot closer than the scores," Head Coach Jonathan Scott said. "I'm glad we hung in there when they went on runs, and we responded every time."

Point Loma jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the opening set after Sophia Baugh and Avery Allemann combined for a block to cap off a 4-0 Sea Lions run. PLNU then rolled the rest of the set, holding CUI to a .048 hitting % in the first.

The Golden Eagles then scored the first three points of the second set, only for the Sea Lions to respond with another 4-0 run, which included a pair of Baugh service aces.

A back-and-forth second stanza was then tied at 19 apiece, before Point Loma scored six of the final seven points of the set, with Saren Rogers and Anna Massari recording a pair of kills each in that stretch to give PLNU a two-set-to-none lead.

In similar fashion, the Sea Lions broke open a close third stanza by scoring the final five points of the match to turn a one-point advantage into a six-point final set victory.

Abigail Nua led all players in kills (17) and digs (12) to post her third double-double already this season. Baugh dished out a match-high 33 assists to go along with her match-leading two aces.

Massari, Allemann and Baugh all recorded four blocks, while Makenna Joyce (11 digs) and Genevieve Hara (10 digs) joined Nua with double-digit digs.

PLNU won it PacWest opener for the seventh-straight year, while collecting its fourth sweep victory in its past five matches.

Point Loma (7-0 overall, 1-0 PacWest) will continue conference action on Saturday in Santa Barbara with a road match against Westmont at 2 p.m.
