VANGUARD TRIPS UP PLNU IN KEY PACWEST BATTLE

(COSTA MESA, Calif.) In a battle of second place teams in the PacWest standings, with the winner joining Azusa Pacific atop the conference, PLNU Women's Basketball was defeated by Vanguard on Thursday night in Costa Mesa, 60-50.

In a defensive first quarter, The Sea Lions were able to hold the Lions to only 24% from the field and 13% from behind the arc. Four of the five Point Loma starters scored in the first quarter, including Tavia Rowell who had five of her 13 points to help PLNU take a 13-9 lead after one

Senior forward Annika Thayer tied her season best of six points in the second quarter alone, as PLNU remained strong on defense, forcing Vanguard into 11 straight missed shots.

During the third quarter, Alli McDonald grabbed four of her 14 rebounds, but the Lions went on a 8-0 run to close out the third quarter to take an eight-point lead into the fourth.

In the final period, Hannah Golan scored five points in a 7-0 PLNU run to help Point Loma's comeback bid, but it was not enough as the Sea Lions were held to their lowest scoring output of the season.

Point Loma (14-5 overall, 9-2 PacWest) heads back to Golden Gym on Saturday to take on Hawai'i Hilo at 2 p.m.
