(SAN DIEGO) No. 14 PLNU Men's Soccer moved atop the PacWest standings with a 2-1 comeback victory over Azusa Pacific on Wednesday.
APU got on the scoreboard first in the 38th minute, but for the second time this season the Sea Lions came from behind to take down the Cougars.
Ryan Doyle leveled the game early in the second half with his first career PLNU goal before Point Loma left it late to score the winner through
Emmett Layman with just 1:05 remaining in the match.
In the 55th minute,
Inaki Santamarina played a short corner to
Curtis Collazos to loop in a cross to Doyle at the back post to score the equalizer with a powerful header.
The Sea Lions nearly scored on a few other occasions, continuing to pressure the Cougars' goal, and were finally rewarded with 65 seconds left after a brilliant solo run from Layman.
Collecting the ball in his own half, Layman surged forward on the dribble and slalomed past a few APU defenders before calmly slotting into the back of the net with his left foot.
Layman's nine goals this season rank second in the conference, only behind teammate
Elijah Langford (11), who drew the corner kick from which Doyle scored.
Point Loma (10-3-1 overall, 6-1 PacWest) reached double-digit wins for the third straight season.
PLNU next travels to Santa Barbara to play at Westmont on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
