(SAN DIEGO) No. 7 PLNU Men's Basketball put on a show for the Golden Gym crowd on Wednesday night, as Point Loma defeated Cal State San Marcos in its home opener, 75-61.
The Sea Lions held the Cougars to just 31.7% shooting, including 26.7% in the first half, as the hosts swatted away eight shots, with six of those blocks coming via
Andrew Hommes.
Four Sea Lions scored in double figures, led by
James Nobles' game-high 18 points.
Andrew Nagy had 14 points, while Hommes (6 rebounds) and
Jaden Matingou (8 rebounds) had 11 points apiece.
Caden Harris nearly joined them in double figures with his eight, seven of which came during a 16-6 PLNU stretch in the first half that turned a five-point deficit into a five-point lead.
Matingou's steal resulted in his alley-oop dunk from a Hommes pass off the backboard to give Point Loma a double-digit advantage going into the locker room.
The Sea Lions then opened the second half on an 11-4 run to extend its lead to a game-high 17 points, as Matingou's rebound led to Nobles' fastbreak bucket on the other end.
PLNU's lead shrunk to no fewer than nine the rest of the way, as the hosts shot a perfect 14-for-14 from the free throw line in the second half.
Nagy helped the Sea Lions win the points in the paint battle, 30-20.
Point Loma (3-0 overall) returns to Golden Gym on Saturday to host Stanton at 4 p.m.
