PLNU ADVANCES TO REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP FOR FIRST TIME

(SAN DIEGO) For the first time in program history, PLNU Volleyball will play in the NCAA West Regional championship.

No. 1 seed Point Loma took down No. 5 seed Alaska Fairbanks in four sets (25-22, 25-20, 20-25, 25-18) on Friday night in the regional semifinals to set up a championship matchup against No. 3 seed Fresno Pacific.

PLNU closed out the first set by scoring eight of the final 10 points, overturning a 17-20 deficit, as Kyra Miles put the Sea Lions up a set, before Point Loma led by as many as seven points in the second to lead 2-0.

After Fairbanks took set three to prolong the match, Point Loma ran away with it in the fourth set, going on a 6-0 run on Macy Reynolds' serve to take a 15-9 advantage.

PLNU led by no fewer than five the rest of the way before Jill Leslie officially booked Point Loma's spot in the regional championship match with a kill.

Abigail Nua led the team with 16 kills, while Kyra Miles had 12. Sophia Baugh posted a double-double of 44 assists and 12 digs, as Reynolds (18 digs) and Hailey Wilson (12 digs) also reached double-digit digs. Miles and Leslie controlled the net with four blocks each.

With the victory, Point Loma (26-4 overall) sets up an all-PacWest regional championship against Fresno Pacific (27-1), who beat No. 7 seed Central Washington in five on Saturday. The Sea Lions and Sunbirds will play for the third time in the past three weeks, with the teams splitting the last two matches that both required five sets.

First serve in Golden Gym is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Saturday.
