(SAN DIEGO) PLNU Women's Tennis made a major statement on Wednesday, taking down the No. 10 team in the ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings, Augustana, by a 4-2 margin at the Barnes Tennis Center.
Â
The match start time was delayed nearly two hours because of rain, but that didn't stop the Sea Lions from winning their fifth straight match.
Â
After Augustana won the doubles point,
Emely Valencia got Point Loma on the board with a comprehensive 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 5.
Â
The Vikings then retook their lead, 2-1, only for the Sea Lions to storm back by winning the final three matches to finish.
Â
Antonia Barth (No. 4),
Anna Pallencaoe (No. 6) and
Alina Kupfer (No. 2) all won their first sets 7-5 before triumphing in straight sets, including Barth winning her second set 6-0.
Â
Kupfer's 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 2 came against the No. 57 singles player in NCAA Division II.
Â
Quin Brady, who combined with
Arianna Audelo to win at No. 1 doubles against the No. 18 doubles team in the country, was leading 6-3, 6-6 on Court No. 3.
Â
Point Loma (7-2 overall) is scheduled to return to the PLNU Tennis Courts on Friday to host NCAA Division I Cal State Fullerton at 9 a.m.
