(NAMPA, IDAHO) No. 4 seed PLNU Baseball is alive and swinging.
Point Loma staved off elimination in emphatic fashion, hitting a season-high seven home runs on its way to a 20-6 victory over No. 1 seed Northwest Nazarene that kept the Sea Lions alive in the NCAA West Regional.
After a loss to Montana State Billings earlier on Thursday, PLNU needed a win to keep its season going and answered the call immediately, scoring 14 unanswered runs across the first three innings against NNU, including five in each of the first and second.
PLNU loaded the bases with no outs in the first before
Josiah Rodriguez was hit by a pitch to score the first run of the game.
Noah Meffert followed that up with a two-RBI single to left, while
Jake Schwartz's RBI-groundout and
Owen May's sacrifice fly capped off a five-run first.
Matt Bernath and
Luke Reece then hit back-to-back homers in the second before Meffert extended the Sea Lions' lead to double digits with a three-run blast.
Point Loma went back-to-back once more in the third, as Reece scored three with his second homer of the day, before Entrekin followed suit with a solo shot.
Meffert then homered again in the seventh to take his RBI count to seven for the game, while Entrekin also left the yard once again in the eighth. Entrekin's three-run homer took his season total to 23 and his RBI count to 73, setting a new PLNU single-season program record for RBIs.
Point Loma's seven home runs ties its most ever in an NCAA West Regional game, equaling the seven the Sea Lions hit against NNU on May 20, 2022.
Ray Cebulski earned the win on the mound, pitching seven innings while allowing five runs (four earned). He retired the first 10 NNU batters he faced.
Point Loma (38-17 overall) will have a rematch with Montana State Billings (33-20) on Friday at 5 p.m. PST / 6 p.m. MST.
Prior to that, MSUB will play NNU at 1 p.m. PST / 2 p.m. MST.
If MSUB wins, PLNU would need to beat the Yellowjackets two games in a row. If NNU wins, the loser between PLNU and MSUB would be eliminated, while the winner will advance to play NNU on Saturday at 5 p.m. PST / 6 p.m. MST with a Super Regionals berth on the line.
